Poem in PoetryBay Online

I just discovered that one of my poems is now available in the Fall 2009 issue of PoetryBay Online. This issue is loaded with good poems from wonderful poets from the Pacific University MFA program–like my illustrious colleague and alumna pal Michelle Bitting, the ever-stunning Ellen Bass, tough-and-tender Dorianne Laux, and my esteemed former faculty advisers Joe Millar and Marvin Bell. Not to mention Robert Bly, Kim Stafford, Lyn Lifshin, and Nick Carbó–the list goes on. As online journals go, this one is a heavyweight, and I feel lucky to appear in such good company. Enjoy!

A fine poem, Robert. Well crafted. Congratulations. The setting, the images, the compariasons are clever and beautiful. I love these lines in particular:

/A little delusion, it seems, is also needed
    when the blue-on-blue of a sunscreen-scented life
leaves a residue on the skin, a thin suit
of leftover armor for the costume parties
    not thrown by trees,/

There are many other good poems in this issue. Virgil Suarez’s “Elvis in Tallahassee” is a trip worth taking. It’s such a pleasure to see so many poets, old friends, new friends, new discoveries, all in one place, like Floyd Salas, Eileen Pun, Joe Bruchac, Ellen Bass, Linda Pastan, Doug Holder, Lyn Lifshin–the list goes on. And the always delightful and incomparable Edward Field, one of my heroes, who still enthralls and amazes me with his keen and comic observations. He makes it look so easy.

Thanks for pointing the way here.

Thanks, Paul. So sorry to have missed you in my own back yard last week. I hear the reading was a knockout!

Yes, I think George Wallace (another Pacific alumnus) has outdone himself this time with such a cast of characters. But then again, this is my kind of stuff. Yours too, apparently.

p.s. I know The King is dear to your heart (i.e. you can’t get enough)–but you’re right, Suarez relishes the moment, and brings us with him.

I have lately, when I’ve been taken by a poem, noticed that the end lines seem to be great, and while your ending lines in this poem are nothing to scoff at, in this case it’s your opener that wows me. Excellent job.

Thanks, Keith. I think you’re right–the lines sort of shove off. This wasn’t conscious in the writing, but maybe a product of wanting to stay loose and free so that each successive line would be slightly unpredictable. I think I was reading Ashbery around this time. Fun observation.
