I live in Southern California and study at Pacific University in Oregon. The process to getting there was very unique for me since I know one of the faculty and wanted to study with him. That said, the overarching principle that has served me in this situation is to follow my intuition. I read the poems of faculty at different programs and tried to imagine what it would be like to study under them. I'm very grateful that I got into the program I did, and that I decided to go there. It has fit like a glove so far. I added a link to my "Doing Your MFA In Writing All Over Again (or, what every MFA student should know at the beginning that graduating students have learned by the end.)" at the end of this post. There is some very interesting discussion in the comments section there about MFA programs - from long-time graduates and those who have never done them as well.
